Academic Support Services : Non Program/Visiting/Unclassified

When you register for an AU course, academic support will be made available to you. The kind of academic support you will receive depends on which course you take. For example, courses offered by the Faculty of Business use a student support centre model while most other courses use a tutor support model.

Tutor Support Model

In the tutor support model, you will be assigned a tutor.

Tutors are qualified experts in their academic areas and provide you with direction and academic support with your coursework. Your tutor will assist with questions you have about the academic content of your course, mark your assignments and exams, and provide you with feedback.

Tutors are available during your course contract period, and we encourage you to maintain regular contact throughout your course.

Who can I contact about questions or concerns that I have about my academic support?

AU’s Learning Services Tutorial Unit at http://tutorial.athabascau.ca/ coordinates the assignment of academic support to students in undergraduate courses. Learning Services Tutorial will

  • assign academic support to students by the 20th of the month prior to the course start date.
  • advise students about any changes in their academic support.
  • provide advance notification when a tutor is going to be away for more than one week.
  • inform students of their alternate tutor’s contact information when their tutor is going away for more than 10 business days.
  • resolve tutor service concerns collaboratively with the academic coordinator.

Student Support/Success Centre Model

In the student support centre model, you will have access to the Faculty of Business Student Support Centre or the Faculty of Science and Technology Student Success Centre. Your first point of contact will be with an undergraduate student advisor, who will assess your needs, answer your questions when appropriate, and refer you to an academic expert when necessary.

Academic experts are assigned to courses based on their academic qualifications (master's or doctoral degrees) and experience in a subject area, such as accounting, finance, marketing, or entrepreneurship. Academic experts also mark your assignments and exams.

How will I be notified of the kind of academic support I will be receiving?

AU will generate a letter informing of you of the academic support that has been assigned to you for your course on or about the 20th of the month prior to your start date. If you have chosen to receive print letters, the letter will be mailed to you. If you have chosen to receive e-letters, then your letter will be available for you to view in the myAU web portal.
